Skype 3.2 Beta

Wow... I've gotta say. This new Skype is amazing in terms of what it's got packed under the hood. The new CoDec that Skype has implemented, their own SVOPC CoDec is amazing. I've tested it with a friend and it really impresses me. Not that I'm the only one saying this either.. others are equally blown away.

Apparently, there is no more need for a headset. You can talk without one now, as the CoDec is so smart that it removes the echo entirely. I used Skype 3.1, so did my friend (in the USA) and then we both tried Skype 3.2. Not only did the roundtrip time (time that it takes from my signal to reach the recipient and back) reduce, but the sound quality was crisp! Especially when it comes to the pronunciation of letters such as the "s" or "c" which in my experience are much more intense. Not that I'm an audiophile, but I really do think that this is the single most important achievement for Skype since Skype itself. It's still a beta so I'm sure that the CoDec is being tinkered on, but I'm sure that we can expect many more great things from these guys.

Another wonderful feature is that you can import your Gmail/Yahoo/MSN contacts. You can log in, it checks the email addresses of your contacts and sees whether or not they're also using Skype. I've checked and found around 10 'new' contacts for Skype, people I didn't know also use the program. It's something you can do once in a while since new people start using Skype daily. Very, very useful!

This is probably one of the most exciting things I've seen in quite a while. With all the developments in technology, I am surprised that the users need to conform to the archaic input devices. Keyboards have always been around, but why not just dispose of it altogether and go for something entirely new? The nerds of the future will be bodybuilders and extremely dexterous... haha!

Google Docs & Spreadsheets

The engineers at Google have been working very hard on their Google Spreadsheets. They just released the API for that too. They might be working hard on Docs, but they haven't released too many new functions for that yet.

I know that they've hired the guys at iRows, have implemented some new functions too (such as GoogleLookup and GoogleFinance). They're still lagging behind Editgrid but give it a few more months and I'm sure we'll see them catch up.

See the differences between Editgrid, Google Spreadsheets and Excel 2003 here. If you want to see how one of my spreadsheets using the GoogleLookup function looks like, click here. You'll see that it's far from perfect, and a few things still need to be modified, like the following;

* Some GoogleLookup searches don't work correctly, you'd think that GoogleLookup("Germany", "population") would work...
* Population searches are not integers, so using these in other fields
(such as calculation of GDP per capita) are not possible
* Revision is only in PST, other timezones would be appreciated
* Change the 100 row maximum to something more workable, like 1000
* Change the 250 GoogleLookup maximum to unlimited.

Skype, we all love it. I think one of the most promising features is called Skypecast. You can host a Skypecast and talk about what you like, and it's a great way to come into contact with others who and have the same interests.

Yesterday we had a really good Skypecast, if I may say so myself. I've been talking to people from all over, from Iceland, Israel, India, Germany, Australia, UK, USA, and the Netherlands. Those of you will know who you are. I thoroughly enjoyed that. I think that this might be a good place to post some info about a whole range of topics... pretty much like we described. Marketshare Firefox increasing

Firefox's marketshare is increasing. For French readers, the original site is here, with more info. Stats are from 29 may to the 4th of june 2006. It seems that Microsoft's hegemony in the browser market is definitely over. Even when they release their newest OS, Vista, I think that Firefox's marketshare might be dented a bit, but overall, I expect it to continue to increase over the long run. I think that Firefox will account for 20% of the browser market by the beginning of 2008.

It is interesting to note, that most users are to be found in the weekends. This means that the corporate adoption is lagging to personal adoption. With Skype for instance, the opposite is true.

I found a pretty decent site to watch some tv online. You need a browser which supports ActiveX. IE does this natively, Firefox requires an extension - read the bottom of the page for info. If you know any others, let me know!

Wikimapia - Firefox only

Wikimapia is a synergy of the Wiki concept and Google Maps. It's addictive, very addictive. Cancel your appointments. This is the best thing since sliced bread. It's basically a map of the world, where users can add info about certain sites. Simple, yet very effective.

Major Web 2.0 feel to it, it's intuitive and IMHO has a good future ahead. They make it possible to insert in multiple languages, smart! Try it yourself.

Update: Sasha tells me that it is IE compatible now. At the time of writing (27-5-2006) it wasn't. Now it is. :-) It is also a lot more popular now.

Google working on Online Office Suite

The news today was rather interesting... Google's upcoming Google Calendar (or CL2 as it's called internally) is still in a closed beta but some site managed to obtain some screenshots. The very latest news is that Google acquired Writely. It looks like Google really is working on their Online Office Suite. So next will be a spreadsheet? My vote will be irows... we'll see! I sure hope so!

Skype's growth and superior network

Skype is quite a success story. Their story is remarkable, to say the least. Some things do need to be noted. I thought that the growth would be exponential, but the rate seems to have decreased a bit, maybe just a temporary breather for it to become more of a household name. A lot of early adopters have already embraced it, despite their distrust of proprietary software (read: contemporary Open Source frenzy).

Skype is the de facto VoIP standard, and I think that the emergence of even easier to use equipment and more mainstream acceptance will usher even more interest for this telecommunications revolution. The paradigm shift from a server-client based framework to a P2P system heralds an extremely robust network, an Internet within the Internet, so to speak. Scalability and larger userbases will not strain centralized servers (deteriorating quality) but will increase Peers (or nodes, in Skype lingo) and thus improving quality. In economic terms, the marginal cost per extra user is negligible.

Basically it boils down to each user (peer) offering a bit of their connection to relay the conversations of others. If any user wishes to sign off whilst someone else is using their connection, the calling party won’t notice a considerable loss of quality since the call is simultaneously being routed via multiple nodes. 99% of it is in fact P2P, only the login and creation of a username will require authentication on a centralized server. Once that is done, all calls are dealt via Peers. Skype has other services, such as voicemail, call-forward, SkypeIn and SkypeOut. The first two require storage in a centralized server, the latter two require a gateway to and from the POTS (Plain Old Telephone System)
network.

With roughly 210 million broadband subscribers, each with a few users, Skype still has quite a way to go. Competition is also around; gTalk, Project Gizmo, MSN to name just a few. It's going to be exciting!

As for the measurements: These represent the dates when the milestone amounts were reached. The actual amount of online users depends on the time, most users are online around 16:00 CET, not in the weekends.

Best translation tools thus far

I have written a small blog entry a while ago about Google's gTranslator, that's what I call it anyway. Apprently there already is something called gTranslator, nothing to do with human languages though.

It might still take a while before we can all understand each other, but work is in progress and I'm sure that it won't take too long anymore. Until then, we can always look up certain words on the Net. But what are the best translation sites thus far anyway? Here's a list of the better ones:

Removed Netstat

I hate popups. I used Netstat (they recently changed their policy, allowing pop-ups, so they're not link worthy anymore - so if you wish to find them, just Google them) to see how many users come from various places, but the downside was that my blog generated a pesky pop-up. It was always blocked with my Firefox, but not everybody uses that of course....

My answer to pop-ups: SCREW 'EM.

I won't see where all the users comes from, but I've recently added this site to Google Analytics. Just leave a comment if you appreciate my blog... ads will be dealt with swiftly and without remorse.

Skype 2.0 Beta release

Skype just release their beta version, hot off the press - get it here when it's still warm!

New features include: webcam!!
Also a list of files sent over in your history, is also useful.
I'm not really sure if I like the new sounds though... but these can be modified of course.

Finally, they've included webcam functionality. This will increase the bandwidth of your connection significantly, if you encounter problems with it, or lagging, you might be better off not using it.

It's definitely the sleekest looking version thusfar, those guys know what they're doing.

All in all, it's very positive and it's definitely worth trying. It's still a beta, but I've been beta testing for ever and most builds are rather stable. Expect a stable release within 3 weeks or so... probably just before XMas.

Firefox 1.5 Final

My favourite search giant just launched their long awaited Google Base. Some already call this an eBay-killer. I still expect eBay to sell off Skype and hope that Google will buy it from them. Maybe just wishful thinking, but insiders say that Google was rather pissed about eBay snatching it first. With backing from Google, Skype's future will be secured for eons. But then again, without it, Skype still has a bright future. Albeit that we'll need to wait for interoperability between all the new VoIP protocols - but that's another story.

There isn't a week that goes by without this index-crazed behemoth launching some other kick-ass service. They reinvent the way business is being done, having also just launched Google Analytics - no costs at all unless your site has 5+ million visits per week. This all at the expense of similar based companies, who charge their customers for these services.

Other services I expect sometime soon:

Google Calendar (sharable with other gmail account users)
Google Real Estate Finder (in conjunction with Google Maps)
Google Contacts (More in depth version of what Gmail has)

My Firefox 1.5 RC 1 gave me a message that an update was available. I downloaded it and now I've got Firefox 1.5 Final. I'm checking various websites but nobody has mentioned the news yet... this must be fresh from the press since www.mozilla.org doesn't even mention it. Am I the first blogger to notice it???

Statistical chance of life on other planets...

In a recent poll conducted for the National Geographic Channel, quite a few Americans believe that there is life on other planets. 60% believe so. Statistically speaking, the chance it doesn't exist would be about as probable as seeing ET walk into your room in the next 4 minutes.

The Drake equation should give an estimate, the chance that there is life out there. The Kardashev scale shows us how technologically advanced these aliens could be. I think the most compelling evidence there is in favour of intelligent life out there is that they have not tried to contact us, sorry Fermi...

We all know that oil is running out. The Hubbert Curve represents the total amount of oil and at what stage we are now, some people say that we've passed the half way point. The OPEC would like to increase production, but is already at full (~ 99%) capacity. What will happen once there's none left? Petrodollars are know, when do we step over to Petro-euros?

Start investing in alternative resources, and do so as quick as you can. I foresee a huge market in yachting again soon... since they're luxurious, relatively fast and only need wind. The hydrogen revolution will also unfold soon, just a matter of time.

eBay buys Skype

I'm not happy with the news. Let that be clear. Skype says it will operate independent, and will be free from Skype to Skype but somehow I will see advertising sneaking into their program. I sure hope I'm wrong about this but for some reason I have a picture of a fat old American cowboy, unsure what to do with his cash - teaming up with a beautiful young European woman with a bright future ahead of her... maybe a bit naive about what his intentions really are.

This marriage has all the ingredients for a fantastic future for P2P VoIP calling. It could, alternatively, just turn out to be another advertising platform like MSN Messenger... cheap calls for the masses, just need to deal with the flashing ads on your screen. If this is the case, I quit and will get an alternative.

Their credo could reassure you, to me they do have an air of - I kind of trust these guys. We do have to be realistic here and keep in mind we're talking about a company and a company's goal is to make profits, the question is, will they do so at the expense of my privacy?

Genealogy - WikiTree

WikiTree, a collaborative effort to catalogue a complete lineage of Mankind. Rather bold task I suppose, but just imagine the absolute wealth of information available; life expectancy, migration, average family size, etc. It is not affiliated directly with Wikipedia, although they do use the underlying software infrastructure called MediaWiki. I think I might add my family info to it also. I would like to see more graphs and statistics on the page though. This is definitely one to bookmark though, I foresee a bright future for WikiTree.

Wiki's are becoming increasingly important, despite criticisms.

Google vs Skype

Google just launched Google Talk, an Instant Messaging client that you can download for your pc. You can talk for free with anybody else on your list, right now, those will only be other gmail users. Skype has just announced SkypeWeb en SkypeNet - new tools for website designers to incorporate the power of Skype in their websites. Skype is still a privately owned company, but apparently Rupert Murdoch had offered a staggering $US 3 billion. For a company that's been around for almost 2 years, that's an average of $US 4.11 million a day since it's existence... that's AMAZING! Google is selling some more of it's stock and will have about $US 7 billion in it's war chest, enough to buy Skype?

Flying is a health hazard

A Cypriot airliner, an Air France airplane a Tunesian charter crash, all within 2 weeks of each other. Is a patern starting to emerge? Just 4 days before I board an airplane myself, I'm starting to wonder if it's such a good idea. There is speculation if the Cypriot airliner might have been hijacked. Two F-16 fighterpilots, following the airplane, described events "saw a situation that was not normal in the pilots' cabin." All 121 souls have been lost, according to the last reports.

UPDATE: Seems that the pressure was lost in the aircraft. An sms was sent saying; "The pilot has turned blue in his face. Farewell cousin, we are freezing." Horrible way to go.

Mars or bust

NASA has been in the news a lot recently, happy that their acronym will not be interpretted as the morbid "Need Another Seven Astronauts" - after the unsucessful reentery of spaceshuttle Columbia and the omnipresent stigmata of the Challenger disaster.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) was succesfully launched today. Mission: to explore Mars like never before, seeking water and mapping the surface. The exploration of Mars has been underway for a bit now, but this $ 500 million aircraft will be an artificial satellite around Mars and make pictures of the next 4 years.

Can we expect a Google Mars soon? They've mapped the Earth and the Moon already.

Civilization IV, coming soon

There has got to be some sort of Freudian explanation for my addiction to the Civilization series. Megalomania I'm sure. Anyway, as the game title suggests, you need to create an entire civilization from the dawn of history which can survive the test of time. The graphics are phenomenal and if the gameplay is anything like the previous versions, I'll be spending some time in Gaming Rehab.

Civilization IV promises to be another excellent game, I can't wait for Q4 2005 to arrive... will be on my harddrive the second it hits the stores, that's for sure.

Compression is a technique used to compact data into smaller units than the original, without significant loss when unpacking (decompressing/unpacking). When it comes to data compression, there are several protocols, some are better than others. Without elaborating the intricacies, it basically removes redundancies. There are various types, depending on what you intend on compressing.

Audio: ogg vorbis, mp3, wma
Data: 7z, rar, ace, zip

My personal favourite is rar. One of the best techniques is 7z. There are better ones, but this is still relatively well known.

Wikipedia is a collaborative effort to collect the sum of human knowledge, thus creating a free-content encyclopedia available in all languages. They are still growing fast, extremely fast in some cases. Encyclopedia Britannica is not amused with Wikipedia's growth and has often claimed the information unreliable, this is true though? Why this amazing popularity? Maybe because we live in a society where we don't necessarily accept answers given by the authority (read: Britannica) and set about creating our own answers, these will be checked/corrected by peers, keeping the whole system in check... just a thought. Companies have noticed the importance of Wikis too. In any case, you can't quote from Wikipedia, since it's always changing... but wait, doesn't this apply to the whole World Wide Web also?

Really Simple Syndication, what the heck is it anyway? Well, it's a way of quickly viewing content to a site without having to actually going to that site. Firefox has a little button the bottom right of the screen indicating that you can subscribe to an rss-newsfeed. You can manually add them also, if you have the right rss-url (these typically end with .xml). RSS is a hype now, share them here. If you don't use Firefox, you can use one of many RSS readers. Or just go to Bloglines and view it straight from your browser. My RSS (actually Atom, small difference) is here.

Goodbye Esperanto, hello gTranslator

Esperanto’s goal is to make possible for everyone to communicate with each other, but it looks like Google might come with a tool which will do so, but then online of course. The concept is simple, cross-link translated documents and have a machine learn all languages. Read more about it here… very interesting. Europe, a great idea

Europe, stemming from the Semitic word for sunset (erebu: land where the sun sets... duh), is a great place to live. Like a giant with 25 independent brains though, it's a bit schizophrenic.

There are huge differences between the richer Western European countries and the poorer Eastern European countries. Just saw a great documentary on Dutch television, most of the commentary is in Dutch but chunks are in English also - it can also be viewed online (top right). More facts, draft Constitution and national anthem.

Google, who doesn't love those guys? They brought us the best search engine in the world, gmail, google maps and google earth, Blogger and many many more nifty toys.

Today I realize that Google's homepage is a bit different, the number of indexed sites has increased. None of the regular tech sites have noticed it yet... haha, am I one of the first?? Anyway, they have increased by a sloppy 100 million sites or so.. There are, however, plenty of sites which can't be found using Google, or any other (large) search engine for that matter. This is called the invisible web, and there are ways of tapping into this relatively unused resource.

I'm a loyal Google user when it comes to searching, but when searching for particular info, other sites might be better. Or sometimes a visual approach works best (uses Google, ;-) ). A good Firefox extension can also do miracles.

4-fourths cake

I just did the impossible! I made a cake! It's called a 4-fouths cake. Rather simple to make, even I could do it.

Ingredients:

- 4 eggs
- 400 grams of sugar
- 400 grams of flour
- 400 grams of butter
- 8 grams vanilla sugar
- 40 grams cocao powder

1 - Seperate egg-white from egg yellow.
2 - Mix egg white until hardend.
3 - Add vanilla sugar to all the sugar. Add egg-yellows to this, and mix it!
4 - Add a small amount of flour, then add some butter and gradually do so until all the flour and butter is mixed.
5 - Seperate about 3 large spoons of this dough into another bowl & add the cocao powder. Mix some more.
6 - Divide 1/4th of the mixed egg-white to the cocao mix. Add the rest of the egg-white to the remaining dough.
7 - Butter up the cake mould and fill up with the (yellow) dough. Cocao dough comes on top.
8 - Cover mould with alu-foil and place in a pre-heated oven to 180°C for about 50-60 mins until dough is dry (check dryness with wooden toothpick, sticky isn't good yet).

Skype - newest version

Niklas Zennström's brainchild, Skype, has been upgraded to version 1.3.0.60 for the Windows environment. There are other versions available, in case you're not a fan of Microsoft. Check their site, they also have flavours in Mac and Linux. Symbian will come soon, according to the guru.
